  • Passion Flowers are native to Brazil and Argentina and are an absolute must-have for any romance, heirloom, or butterfly garden. All passion vine flowers are unique and unlike any other flowering plant. In the early 1600s, Catholic priests in Peru documented what they believed to be a religious symbolism in the unique flowers of this beautiful vine. The priests related the parts of the flower to features of the Crucifixion, and thus the name passiflora or passion flower was coined.
  • Passiflora suberosa is the Corky Stemmed Passion Flower, a native of Florida, Texas, and the Caribbean. While it may not be a showy ornamental with its tiny, pale green flowers and pea-sized purple fruits, its true value lies in its role as a host plant for native butterfly species. This makes it an ideal choice for butterfly gardens, supporting local ecosystem
  • Care: For optimal growth, plant your passion flower in a partial-shade location with fertile, well-draining soil and a trellis or other support. Water deeply, allowing the soil to dry out slightly between waterings to avoid spindly growth. Fertilize with a quality, bloom-boosting fertilizer in the spring, and prune as needed after flowering to control size.
  • Indoor Growing: While Suberosa Passion Vine can be grown indoors, it is primarily used as a butterfly host plant and has little value as an indoor decorative plant. To grow indoors, place the plant in a pot with good drainage and position it in bright, indirect light. A small trellis can provide necessary support. Misting the leaves can help maintain the humidity. Modifications may be required to produce flowers or fruit indoors.
  • Climate: This vine is well-suited for USDA Zones 8 to 10. It is generally considered root hardy in Zone 8 when well established. Young plants should be protected from freezing temperatures in all Zones until very well established
